What is an Experimental Design Diagram?

An Experimental Design Diagram (EDD) is a one-page plan used in many middle-school and science-fair projects. It names the independent variable (what you change), its levels and trials, the dependent variable (what you measure), the hypothesis, and the constants that stay the same. Filling an EDD before you collect data prevents “forgot a control” and “mixed up IV and DV” mistakes.

How to use this generator

  • Start from a preset (plants, fertilizer, salt, paper airplane, or blank) then edit the fields for your project.
  • Mark exactly one level as the control when you have a “no treatment” or standard baseline.
  • List constants as one item per line — soil, temperature, tools, timing, and measurement method all count.
  • Export SVG for slides or PNG for a science board. Use the AI tab only for decorative variants.

IV vs DV vs constants

Independent variable = the one factor you deliberately change. Dependent variable = the outcome you measure. Constants (controlled variables) = everything you keep the same so the IV is a fair test. This tool labels those boxes explicitly so students practice the vocabulary used in lab reports.
