What is a mitochondria diagram?
A mitochondria diagram shows the structure of a mitochondrion (plural: mitochondria) — the organelle where most cellular ATP is made. School diagrams highlight the double membrane: a smooth outer membrane and a highly folded inner membrane (cristae) around the matrix.
Parts that must be labeled correctly
- Outer membrane — smooth outer boundary of the organelle.
- Intermembrane space — narrow gap between outer and inner membranes.
- Inner membrane — folds inward as cristae; holds ETC and ATP synthase.
- Cristae — the folds themselves (not a third separate membrane).
- Matrix — fluid inside the inner membrane; Krebs cycle location.
Structure ↔ function (quick exam link)
Folded cristae increase surface area for electron transport. The matrix holds enzymes for the Krebs cycle. Do not draw the inner membrane as a simple smooth bag without folds when the lesson is about ATP production.
