What is an atom diagram?
An atom diagram is a simplified picture of the smallest unit of an element. School diagrams usually show a nucleus (protons and neutrons) with electrons around it. Real atoms are mostly empty space and electrons do not sit on fixed tracks like planets, but the diagram is still the best way to learn the names and charges of the parts. Use a labeled version to study, or a blank version as a worksheet.
Parts of an atom
- Proton: positive charge (+1), in the nucleus, mass about 1 atomic mass unit.
- Neutron: no charge, in the nucleus, mass about 1 atomic mass unit.
- Electron: negative charge (−1), outside the nucleus, much smaller mass.
- Nucleus: tiny center that holds protons and neutrons and almost all the atom’s mass.
