What is an eye diagram?

An eye diagram is a labeled picture of the human eye, usually a side cross-section showing how light enters and where it is focused. Free labeled and blank versions help students learn cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, and optic nerve — the core labels for most school units.

Main parts (what labels must get right)

  • Cornea — clear front layer; first major focusing surface.
  • Iris and pupil — iris is the colored muscle; pupil is the opening that lets light in.
  • Lens — fine-tunes focus onto the retina.
  • Retina — light-sensitive layer at the back (image forms here).
  • Optic nerve — carries signals from the retina to the brain.

Light path (vision)

Light reflects from an object, enters through the cornea, passes the pupil and lens, and forms an inverted image on the retina. Photoreceptors turn light into nerve signals that travel along the optic nerve. Classroom “how vision works” posters should keep this front-to-back order — never reverse cornea and retina.
