What is an electromagnetic spectrum diagram?

An electromagnetic spectrum diagram shows all types of electromagnetic radiation arranged by wavelength (or frequency). Classroom charts usually run from long radio waves on one end to short, high-energy gamma rays on the other, with a tiny rainbow for visible light in the middle. Free labeled and blank versions help students memorize the order and everyday uses.

The main bands (longest λ → shortest λ)

  • Radio waves — broadcasting, some wireless links.
  • Microwaves — ovens, many Wi‑Fi/radar examples.
  • Infrared (IR) — heat, remote controls, thermal cameras.
  • Visible light — the rainbow (ROYGBIV) our eyes detect.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) — sunburn risk, sterilization examples.
  • X-rays — medical imaging.
  • Gamma rays — nuclear/astronomy/high-energy examples.

Wavelength, frequency, and energy

On standard school diagrams, wavelength increases one way and frequency (and photon energy) the other. Radio is long and low-energy; gamma is short and high-energy. Visible light is only a narrow slice — that is why diagrams often “zoom” the rainbow.
